Tim has an extensive academic background in Counselling, Psychology and Health as well work experience in various areas of health from care work to peer support. He has an ongoing interest in the research that underlies the practice of Counselling as it informs the way he works. He has a passion for men’s health and has completed his Masters research in that area.
The type of Counselling method he uses is primarily Solution Focused Brief Therapy but he is also trained in Motivational Interviewing, both to University level. Over time his interests have broadened and he now includes aspects from Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Philosophy, Jungian Psychology, Somatic Experiencing and Existential Therapy in his practice. As a middle-aged male, he understands the shifting needs and struggles facing midlife and beyond, but also the struggles of young men as his youth wasn’t too long ago!
He has had his own personal experience with trauma and anxiety so understands struggles on a personal and academic level. For him one of the most important aspects of counselling is discovering who you are beyond the trauma and/or experiences that brought you to therapy, then living that authentically and confidently out in the world. When men live authentically, he believes they are at their best and have a lot to contribute to society.
He believes issues for men can often be overlooked in the health system with societal expectations to “tough it out” sadly, often in silence. His goal is to create a counselling environment that provides the safety to be vulnerable, honest and in the process find one’s purpose and motivation again. His work is collaborative, where you contribute the expertise on your own life and through the process of counselling we find a way forward. He is committed to seeing men grow into their potential so they can succeed in life whatever form that may take as individuals. He takes great pleasure in seeing men grow from at times a state of despair to prosperity, happiness, contentment and excitement about their lives again.
On a personal level, he enjoys the simple life, good food with friends and family, walking his dog, the outdoors, fishing, reading, music, playing the guitar, watching sport and the occasional game on the PlayStation!
